It's been a great year in Digital Photography and I truly appreciate all of the hard work and creativity y'all have put into the program.
This program would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and dedication. Last year was good but was slowed down by the fact that we didn't get our equipment until halfway through the first semester. This year, however, we were able to hit our stride.
You guys turned in thousands of finished images, which have been used throughout school and district publications and in online publications and social media. Your images have appeared at multiple end-of-the-year banquets for football, cross country, and the dance team, just to name a few. You guys shot the cover of The Shield, have received thousands of page views on the DHS Facebook page, and you can hardly find a page in The Vanguard that doesn't have at least one of your photos on it.
It's been my pleasure watching some of y'all go from having never shot a frame to doing paid work on the weekends, and I know I'm just going to see more and more progress as the program grows.
Seniors, I'm really going to miss you guys, especially those of you that really dove into the program and put your all into it. I know not all of you will go on to pursue photography as a career, but I have no doubt that those of you who do will excel at it, and for those of you that don't, your pictures will be head-and-shoulders above those of your peers. Keep in touch (I want to see more awesome pictures!) and if I can ever help you in any way, you know how to contact me.
Underclassmen, if you have your own gear, make sure to shoot over the summer. The only way to get better is to practice. If you don't have your own gear, borrow some! Everyone can be reading about techniques and theory over the summer. Be fresh and ready to go in the fall so we can hit the ground running and do even more cool stuff than we did this year.
This is a cool BTS video that shows you large but not overly-complex outdoor shoot with some special effects. I know most of you aren't going to have access to junkyards and burn bars, but you can scrim hard sunlight and then go back in and add off-camera flash to get the look you want.
